With everything from getting more exercise into your life to working fruits and vegetables into your meals to cutting back on calories without sacrifice, here are the only diet and fitness tips you’ll ever need to stay fit and healthy.
Tips for Cutting Calories
- Forget the meaning of the word “supersize” and remove it from your vocabulary.
- Make eating your meals an entire event, taking your time to appreciate the smell, the taste and texture of the foods, and never eat standing at the kitchen counter.
- Load up on breakfast to help you eat less throughout the entire day.
- Eat all of your meals on a salad plate rather than the bigger dinner plate.
- When you and your significant other are dining out, if you must get dessert, only order one and share.
Tips for Eating More Fruits and Vegetables
- Start by adding only one fruit or one vegetable to your daily diet, then, gradually increase your servings until you reach the optimal eight to ten per day.
- Once you’ve acclimated yourself to eating more fruits and veggies, aim for at least two servings of either per meal, and then, least three days a week make vegetables the primary part of your lunch.
- Don’t forget vegetable soup, which makes a great lunch or dinner along with a large salad.
- If vegetables really aren’t your preference, many fruits are equally as healthy, low in calories, and chock full of essential vitamins. Try some in the citrus or melon families such as oranges, mangoes, and any one of the many types of melons.
- Keep your freezer full of bagged frozen vegetables that can quickly be mixed with dressings or spiced up with seasonings and made in the microwave or on the stovetop.
Tips for Getting More Exercise
- Forget elevators and escalators and take the stairs whenever possible, and soon it will become second nature.
- Invest in a few audio books or gather some of your most favorite CDs and hit the walking trails.
- When at the local mall, take a trip around the perimeter two or three times before you even start shopping, and park as far away from the door as possible.
- Using a pedometer will help keep track of how many steps you’re taking each day, making you more aware of getting more exercise.
- Try yoga for a low-impact workout that can burn as many calories as walking.
Tips for Healthy Meals
- Always eat your meals beginning with the lowest calorie items first, such as salads, soups, and vegetables. Save the starchy foods and the meat for last when you’ll be less likely to continue eating as you’ll already be content.
- Never skip meals in an attempt to “save calories” as you’ll definitely be doing your body more harm than good.
- Don’t ignore the recommendations and information on the nutritional section of food packages and containers, they’re there for a reason so be sure to read them carefully and use measuring cups or a food scale to be sure you’re getting the serving size right.
- For a tasty dessert, create a smoothie by blending together fat-free milk, the frozen fruit of your choice and wheat germ.
- Eat as early as possible in the evening and brush your teeth after you’re finished to remind yourself that you’re done eating for the day.
Tips for Making Small But Significant Changes
- Switch soda and sugar filled drinks with flavored water.
- Make small changes in the type and amount of condiments you use, such as switching from mayonnaise or salad dressing to mustard.
- Start a food journal and record everything you eat and you’ll be amazed at the difference it can make.
- Brown bag your lunch for work so you’ll always be in control of what you’re eating, also remember to include healthy snacks to reduce the temptation of routinely visiting the coworker with the candy jar.
- Get out of the bad habit of eating in front of the television.

Go to the Head of the Class
There’s something really fulfilling about learning something new, especially when you can enjoy the learning process. And actually being in a class, interacting with your instructor and fellow students, can be an exciting, invigorating experience. And a great change of pace if you feel you’ve gotten stuck in a bit of a rut.
There are all sorts of great reasons to sign up for some kind of class, each with its own benefits. For example, many people take classes for fun. Think of some things you’ve always wanted to know how to do, and find a class at your local community college or YMCA that will teach you how to do it. If you’ve always wanted to learn to crochet or speak Spanish, just signing up for the class and taking a step towards achieving that goal will fill you with a sense of accomplishment. Taking such classes is also a good way to meet new people who are interested in the same things you are interested in.
You should also consider taking classes that could help you advance professionally and financially. Taking night classes at the local college could lead you to a better, more fulfilling job. Taking a course for small business owners could help you become your own boss. Even taking a course to learn more about a certain computer program could eventually lead to a promotion.
Learning something new can have many advantages, whether personal, professional, or even social. Whatever you want to learn how to do, there’s a good chance you can find a class nearby that will teach you how to do it.

This is a mesmerizing and frightening video. It’s a word-for-word parody of Susan Powter’s first workout video, featuring poodles and a crazy poodle-woman. Absolutely surreal. It was made by Nagi Noda for Panasonic. It was part of 10 films they made for the 2004 Athens Olympics.
